Title: AVERT hiring intern to support Information Services team

Please could you share with anyone who may be interested the job advert below. We are looking for an intern for 6 weeks to 3 months) a few days a week. It would suit someone with an interest in international development looking to gain experience in research and communications. The deadline is quite soon - 2nd April.

Role Title:
Information and Advocacy Service Intern

Supervised by: Programme and Information Officer

Time: Minimum of 3 days (or 20 hours) per week

Expenses: Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Approximate dates:  From 15 April for a minimum of 6 weeks and maximum of 3  months (ie. there is some flexibility)

Purpose of Role: To support AVERT’s Information and Advocacy Service, which conducts research into HIV and AIDS news and developments, coordinates AVERT’s external communications and leads our campaigns work. The role would suit someone with an interest in international development issues looking to gain experience in communications and research.

Context: AVERT is an international HIV and AIDS charity based in the UK (Horsham, West Sussex), working to avert HIV and AIDS worldwide through education, treatment and care.

We have three main areas of activity:
• - our website is one of the most popular HIV and AIDS sites in the world providing clear and impartial information and education at global level. Each week around 1 million people access the site.
•   Overseas partner projects - we provide direct support to three community-based projects responding to the HIV and AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa (Malawi and South Africa).
•   Information Service and Advocacy – we conduct research into HIV and AIDS developments to inform our work, respond to requests from the public for information and develop campaigns to highlight specific issues in the HIV and AIDS response.

Training: Full training will be given during the induction period by AVERT staff members. There may be opportunity to attend relevant talks and training events for personal development purposes.

Main responsibilities:
•   Conduct research into HIV and AIDS developments, news and events (50%)
•   Write news stories for the website (10%)
•   Support Information and Advocacy Services ongoing administration tasks (10%)
•   Monitor and interact with AVERT’s social media platforms – Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (10%)
•   Support key Get Plugged In campaign activities (20%)

Person Specification:

•   Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
•   Eager to learn new skills
•   Well organised, able to work to deadlines, prioritise and manage tasks
•   Ability to use initiative and work alone as well as part of a team
•   Commitment to AVERT’s mission
•   Good information technology skills
•   Interest in international HIV and AIDS issues

•   Experience of working with charities and/or volunteering
•   Knowledge of international HIV and AIDS issues
•   Experience of conducting research in professional setting
•   Experience of writing new stories
