Title: Black Communities and HIV, Article and Brixton WAD event
Post by: Vernal Scott on November 28 2014, 05:41 pm
Monday is World AIDS Day and Arise TV (Sky channel 519, live web etc) have agreed to show me being tested for HIV on live television (This Day Live, from 7am). The purpose is to demystify the testing process and to answer some hard questions by presenter Juliette Foster, about the impact of HIV on heterosexual and gay/bi men and women. The broadcast will later be available for viewing on-line.

Also, there was an important article in this week's Voice Newspaper about the impact of HIV on UK black communities. It includes a link to free tickets for the must-attend WAD event on Monday 1st December: http://voice-online.co.uk/article/over-70-women-living-hiv-uk-are-black-african

Lastly, the non-fiction book, God's Other Children - A London Memoir (by Vernal Scott) is about HIV from the UK Black/gay/Christian perspective. It features forewords by Peter Tatchell, Sir Nick Partridge, and Lord Paul Boateng, and was shortlisted for the Polari First Book Prize 2014. Recommended by WH Smith, it is stocked by them, Gay's the Word, and Prowler. It's also on Amazon - where you can see reader reviews:  http://bit.ly/XmuLCs and more info at www.vernalscott.com

A reading from the book at Polari can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIJaul7nsT0&list=UUP6BaxPBU9MbG7zGWsVykWw

Over 70 percent of all women living with HIV in the UK is black African. 1 in 8 gay/bi men in London are thought to be living with HIV - and the odds are worse if you are black and gay. This is totally unacceptable! Black communities are also testing too late. We must work together to turn this situation around.

Best wishes

Vernal
