GETTING OUT is a film produced by the Refugee Law Project in collaboration with the Ugandan Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights & Constitutional Law.

In the wake of the brutal murder of renowned Ugandan LGBTI human rights activist, Mr. David Kato, and following growing concern over the practice of removing and deporting sexual and gender minority asylum claimants back to their home countries, UK Lesbian & Gay Immigration Group (UKLGIG), Refugee Law Project and the wider Ugandan Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights & Constitutional Law, invite you to a public launch of a revealing documentary on the realities of lesbian, gay and trans asylum-seeking.

For many LGBTI Africans, coming out to family and friends at home is not even an option. Before they can come out, they have first to get out. This means not only finding means to escape the political forces promoting homophobia at home, but also dealing with the hypocrisies and failings of asylum systems the world over. Through the true stories of five individuals, Getting Out, a sixty minute documentary shot in Uganda, South Africa, Geneva and London, with supporting footage from Malawi and Zimbabwe, explores just what it takes...

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with guest speakers including Dr Chris Dolan, Director of Refugee Law Project; S. Chelvan, Barrister, No5 Chambers; Ugandan LGBTI Activist (tbc) and a representative from The Home Office.
After the discussion there will be the opportunity to interact with two of the asylum seekers featured in the film, as well as the producer and directors.

We look forward to welcoming you!
