Lifetime blood donation ban for gay men lifted today
Posted on: November 7 2011, 09:46 am

Although the long-standing ban has been lifted in principle, a condition remains: men who've had sex with a man (or men) in the last year cannot donate blood. This "one-year deferral was chosen in part because of Hepatitis B, which disproportionately affects gay and bisexual men. While there is a four-week window between transmission and detection of HIV, Hepatitis B can take up to a year to be cleared by the body."
