Article in The Independent about prescribing generics rather than on-patent meds wherever possible. This looks at general practice, but the principle is likely to apply to secondary/specialist care, too.

"Health service managers have identified inefficient prescribing by GPs as a key target for savings as the NHS looks to cut costs by around 4 per cent every year"

I think we say see more of this as CCGs have less money to spend than PCTs.
All part of the race to the bottom in healthcare.
