Taking Part Program - getting involved as a patient advocate or activist
Posted on: January 8 2014, 03:34 pm

Taking Part is a program that aims to skill up people living with HIV to influence health and social care decision making .

It is a series initially of 12 workshops which will look at developing skills and an agenda for change set by people living with HIV.

On the 28th of January we will have an introductory workshop looking at the difference between activism and advocacy and introducing the new structures in the NHS. We’ll also look atopportunities for getting involved and influencing services, for example by joining our local Healthwatch, or patient representation in the Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Taking Part is open to people living with HIV in London who want to get involved, or are already involved, in health and social care policy. It will be peer led but we will also invite in skilled facilitators to develop key skills such as:

- understanding human rights and the NHS constitution
- dealing with people in authorities
- responding to policy consultations
- public speaking
- media skills
- lobbying and campaigning in the new health and social care landscape

as well as other areas identified by participants.

Taking Part is led by Positively UK Deputy CEO Silvia Petretti.
