Age UK launches new petition to protect older people’s human rights
Posted on: January 15 2014, 05:29 pm

Dear All,

This week, Age UK has launched a petition calling on the Government to protect the rights of older people receiving social care services.

There is currently a loophole that means that anyone who pays for their own residential care or receives care in their own home is not directly covered by the Human Rights Act. This can mean that two people living next to each other in a care home have different rights and protections simply because of the way their care has been arranged.

The House of Lords inserted a clause into the Care Bill that would close this loophole. However, the Government is now trying to remove it. They believe that the clause is unnecessary and confusing, even though leading lawyers disagree.

Age UK's petition is calling for all older people who receive care to have equal protection under the law. There is a small window of opportunity to influence on this and a need to spread the word as far and wide as possible.

What can you do:
•           Sign the petition at  http://bit.ly/1dNah6l
•           Share the petition with colleagues, supporters, friends and family and ask them to sign it too.
•           Tweet about the petition using the suggested tweet:
