Secondary Objective
To compare the time from baseline until reaching the primary endpoint of either a CD4 cell count ≤350 cells/mm3 measured on two consecutive occasions at least 1 month apart, or initiation of HAART for any reason, annual rate of change in the CD4 cell count percentage, annual median log10 HIV viral load, safety, rate of HSV flares, rate of acyclovir resistant HSV and quality of life between study arms.

Inclusion criteria
Antiretroviral-na´ve adults infected with HIV-1, with CD4 cell count 400-900 cells/mm3 and no use of chronic daily anti-herpes medications in the past 6 months.
