NICE needs your members: community member needed to join the committee developing guidance on promoting oral health

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) produces guidance on the most effective ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease and ill health, and provide social care support. Our guidance is based on research evidence and takes into account the views of relevant professionals, communities and other stakeholder groups.

I am contacting you because we think you or your organisation may have an interest in NICE guidance currently being developed on Oral health: approaches for dental teams on promoting oral health, including how to make a visit to the dentist a positive experience.

The guidance will focus on the best way for dental teams to communicate oral health promotion messages to their patients, both adults and children. These messages include issues such as diet, tobacco and alcohol use, as well as good oral hygiene such as regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste. It will cover approaches including verbal advice, practical demonstrations (for example, of how to brush teeth properly), printed information and new media (for example texting, emailing and social media).

We are currently seeking applications for a ‘topic expert’ community member to join the committee developing guidance on this topic. They should have recent experience (within the last 2 years) of receiving information or advice from their dentist on promoting good oral health and have an understanding of what makes this a positive or negative experience.

The topic expert community member of this committee will play a key role in making sure that the views, experiences and interests of the public, especially vulnerable community groups, are included in the development of this guidance. Our community members are paid a fee to attend meetings and we cover travel and other expenses.

We would welcome an application from those who have recent experience or knowledge of promoting oral health and are able to reflect the experiences and needs of a wide network of relevant members of the public. They need to be able to contribute effectively in a formal committee setting.

Please see webpage below for further information, dates of meetings and the application form.  The deadline for receipt of applications is 9am on Monday 16 June.

I would be grateful if you could forward this opportunity to your members, networks or anyone you think might be interested in this opportunity. If your organisation has a newsletter, Twitter or Facebook account, etc., that you would be willing to post this information to, this would be much appreciated.

If your organisation would like the opportunity to comment on the draft guidance when it is ready, you will need to register as a stakeholder for this topic. To do this, please fill in the short online registration form here: NICE Public Health Stakeholder Registration Form

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any queries about this or any other aspect of NICE’s work.

Apologies for any cross posting.

Best wishes
