Posted on: August 20 2008, 09:10 pm

This is the 12th annual report from the Centre for Public Health, John Moores University.

This report was published July 2008 and compares data from 2006 and 2007.

Key facts and figures:

-  In 2007, the total number of HIV-positive people receiving treatment was 5,212, compared with 4,761 people in 2006, an increase of 9%.
- 907 new cases of HIV were recorded in 2006, compared with 817 in 2007, a decrease of 10%.
- 42% of all cases, or 345 people, were among gay men. Heterosexuals accounted for 49% (assuming in both cases sexual transmission).
- AIDS-related deaths have fallen from from 87 in 1996 to 33 in 2007. But 11 of the 13 deaths in individuals new to treatment during 2007 were directly related to AIDS.
