Working with Politicians - Taking Part HIV advocacy workshop
Posted on: August 5 2014, 12:48 pm

The next Taking Part Workshop will take place on Tuesday 26th of August and it will focus on advocacy work with politicians.

Bill Morgan , a former special adviser at the Department of Health, will lead the session. He will talk about: what motivates politicians; what will politicians be interested in over the next year (both pre and post election); how to communicate with politicians (including how to put HIV issues on politicians' radars); and what politicians can do on your behalf.

Before the session, Bill would like you to think about a 'policy call' that you would ask David Cameron, Ed Miliband or Nick Clegg to consider including in their manifesto, and think about two sentences which can be used to explain it (an example is below).

Example manifesto call:

We will improve the support offered to people living with HIV

- As people live longer with HIV, their needs change
- In order to improve support, we will create a 100 million fund which HIV clinics can bid for to pilot new measures of the experience patients have of their HIV care

Bill is a Founding Partner of the health policy consultancy Incisive Health. Prior to founding Incisive Health in September 2013, Bill worked as a special adviser at the Department of Heath, and before then worked as the health adviser for one of the major political parties. He brings 10 years of experience of politics and healthcare issues.

The workshop will be held at Positively UK, 345 City Road, London EC1V 1LR. We will start at 5:30 with refreshments and networking and the workshop will run from 6 pm until 8 pm.

Please email me to confirm your attendance: Spetretti@positivelyuk.org

Taking Part is a program that aims to skill up people living with HIV to influence health and social care decision making . It is a series of 12 workshops which will look at developing skills and an agenda for change set by people living with HIV. The project is open to people living with HIV in London who want to get involved, or are already involved, in health and social care policy.
