Activist Photography Project

Dear UK CAB Members,

This posting is London centric so apologies for those living and working outside of London.

We are looking for inspirational HIV positive people living in London to take part in the Through Positive Eyes Project, this March 20-29, 2015.

A group of 12 HIV-positive London residents will pick up cameras to join a global project that gives photographic voice to people living with HIV in major cities around the world (Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Mumbai, Bangkok, Port-au-Prince, and London). Through Positive Eyes is an arts-based public health project that addresses key themes of the HIV epidemic: widespread stigma, extreme social inequity, and limited access to lifesaving medication. The project is based on the belief that challenging stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS is the most effective method for combating the epidemic—and that art is a powerful way to do this. The project is co-directed by London-based South African photographer and AIDS activist Gideon Mendel, who has been chronicling HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa since 1993, in collaboration with the Art & Global Health Centre (http://www.artglobalhealth.org) at the University of California, Los Angeles. Through Positive Eyes lives within communities as a traveling exhibition, and on the web at http://www.throughpositiveeyes.org.
