National Health Service or Manchester Health Service?
Posted on: March 2 2015, 12:14 pm

Dear All

You'll have heard the news last week that Greater Manchester (GM) is being given all control of all health services in GM. This appears to have implications for the wider NHS in England in that a formerly national system for England is being fragmented even further to the fragmentation introduced and promoted by the Health and Social Care Act 2012. You might be interested to read the short document (a memo of understanding) underpinning this transfer to GM of health servies, and I've attached it to this message. Seems they're looking to grab 'specialised services' as well as the rest - specialised services is currently where HIV sits. The main advantage of having HIV as a specialised service is that we were able to go some way towards achieving national standards of care regardless - in theory, anyway - of where a patient lives, in a high-prevalence city or a low-prevalence small town or rural area. This new move would appear to blow that advantage out of the water.

Best wishes
Paul
