Taking Part Workshop: HIV activism and direct action Act Up London
Posted on: March 24 2015, 06:15 pm

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 31st of March  from 5:30 to 8:00  at Positively UK.  345 City Road EC1 V 1 LR.

The focus of our meeting will be to look at Direct Action in HIV Advocacy, what is its role? How we can get involved?  What are the things we need to consider?

Our guest speaker/facilitator will be Dan Glass, one of the engines behind the rebirth of Act UP London, a group of HIV activists inspired by the legendary AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power , who uses direct  action and other creative methods to advocate for change to improve the lives of people living with HIV, in solidarity with other marginalised and oppressed groups.

A FEW WORDS FROM DAN
I am an activist, performer and writer. A Guardian ‘UK youth climate leader’ and one of Attitude Magazine’s campaigning role models, and speak out for people power. Through organising political trials defying police repression, founding organisations confronting racism, poverty and climate change and even supergluing the Prime Minister in the process, I try to cause trouble in all the right places. Currently I’m lucky to be involved in ‘Let Freedom Ring!’, a training programme born out of the UK’s recent insurgencies and building human cannonballs as part of ‘Shafted?! On Tour’ for people to challenge the NHS cuts.

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE

Maybe some  of you may have read on the news about the direct action against Farage  in which Dan was involved last week. It had a lot of negative mainstream news coverage. Please see links below for some direct reports on the event. Reflecting on what happened is important and should make for very interesting discussion .

Please see Dan speaking   to the BBC about direct action against UKIP and Farage on Sunday 22nd of March:

Taking Part is a group of people living with HIV,  supported by Positively UK, who are interested in activism and  want to  develop  skills and build opportunities to influence decision making, and attitudes towards HIV. We meet once a month and  have capacity building workshops, or focused discussions on key topics. The project is open to all  people living with HIV in London who want to get involved, or are already involved. Taking Part is a  peer led initiative: by people living with HIV for people living with HIV.

Warm Regards,

Places are limited please confirm your attendance at spetretti@positivelyuk.org
