New NAT Report: The Myth of HIV Health Tourism
Posted on: October 17 2008, 12:52 pm

Dear UK-CAB members

NAT has launched a new report, The Myth of HIV Health Tourism.   It can be downloaded from www.nat.org.uk (the filesize is too large to upload here).

As you know, over the last few years numerous allegations have been made about health tourism to the UK both in general and in relation to HIV.  These claims have affected media and popular perception, as well as Government policy, particularly on entitlement to NHS care.  But as our report clearly demonstrates there is no evidence that HIV health tourism to the UK exists.

Migration has been one of the most seriously debated issues in UK politics recently.  It is therefore vitally important to separate the facts and evidence around migration from the fears and misinformation.

The Myth of HIV Health Tourism specifically addresses and refutes allegations of HIV health tourism to the UK, and offers two specific recommendations to improve Government policy and media reporting, namely that:

The Government must review its policy on entitlement to NHS care so as to exempt HIV treatment from charges.
Journalists should ensure accuracy in their reporting on migration to the UK and stop making claims that HIV health tourism is taking or has taken place.

We ask for your support in achieving these recommendations, in particular calling on the Government to review its current policy on charging for HIV treatment so it no longer denies some of the most vulnerable people in the UK the vital care they may need.

Should you have any questions about this report or want a hard copy, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me at joe.murray@nat.org.uk.

Best regards

Joe
