Big Pharma entry into NHS?
Posted on: January 5 2016, 10:20 am

This press release appeared on the King's College Hospital website:

"Erik Nordkamp has joined King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as a Non-Executive Director. Mr Nordkamp, who is UK Managing Director for Pfizer Ltd, took up his role at King’s on 1 January. Mr Nordkamp has been Managing Director for Pfizer Ltd since February 2015, having worked at the company in other senior roles since 2010. These roles include President and Managing Director, Greece, Cyprus and Malta (2012-15) and Regional Strategy Lead (2010-12)".

Is this a conflict of interest? Do you know of similar developments in other NHS hospital trusts? If so, would you please post a link so that we might be able to figure out if a national picture is emerging.

The press release published on King's College Hospital website is here https://www.kch.nhs.uk/news/media/press-releases/view/18991

Thanks for posting this.  As far as I am concerned, this is definitely a conflict of interest.

Who's Robbing Our NHS?

Coming from the U.S.A. as I do, I have seen first hand the effect that big pharma and the medical industry have - when medicine is an industry, patient care suffers because the main concern is for the bottom line.

There is a reason why President Obama struggled to get affordable healthcare passed by Congress, and why millions of people in the U.S. still have no access to healthcare - because medicine is a business there.

The current UK government have a hidden agenda to undermine and ultimately destroy our NHS, regardless of what they say in their sound bites.  And King's is my local hospital.  But enough from me for now.

What is the role of a non-exec director? Will he be involved in drug purchasing decisions (which would be a conflict of interest...)? If not, then I'm not sure it really is a problem...but I need to understand what the role involves, before I can really say one way or the other...
