Womenís experiences of ageing with HIV: personal, clinical and social care responses to the challenge of ageing with HIV in the UK

This research will explore the experiences and needs of women growing older with HIV in London. It aims to add to the body of evidence around ageing and HIV, as people live longer with HIV due to effective treatment, and older people acquire and are diagnosed with HIV. With a specific focus on women and the gendered experiences of ageing, this research explores how women are responding and adapting to ageing with HIV, with a focus on community, social support, social and healthcare needs and the role of the State and third sector services in meeting these needs.

The research will be conducted by Jacqui Stevenson, a PhD student at the University of Greenwich in the department of Family Care and Mental Health. The research is being carried out within this department under supervision, and has been reviewed and approved by the University Research Ethics Committee.

The research adopts a participatory, gendered and assets-based approach, and qualitative methods. The research will be conducted in different stages, running roughly in sequence but with some overlap:

1) Documentary analysis of existing literature, including a systematic review of social intervention research.
2) Participatory workshops and consultation to develop research questions and themes, and involve people, especially women living with HIV, in constructing the research design and interpreting emerging findings.
3) Policy review and key stakeholder interviews, with clinicians, service providers and other relevant experts.
4) Life story interviews, with women living with HIV aged 50 and over.

If you are interested in finding out more about the research, have materials that you think should be included in the literature review or would be interested in participating in a workshop, stakeholder interview or life story interview please contact Jacqui at j.k.stevenson@gre.ac.uk.
