Worrying reports of pilot scheme to check eligibility for free NHS healthcare
Posted on: July 19 2017, 01:34 pm

UK-CAB members recently reported patients receiving letters asking them to bring identity documents to their clinic in Newcastle as part of a nationwide pilot for a controversial Department of Health eligibility scheme.

Nobody accessing HIV services should be asked for documents to prove their eligibility for free healthcare. The treatment and diagnosis of HIV is exempt from NHS charges.

These checks on eligibility cause undue stress, deter people from accessing services and can have serious consequences for people’s health.

We call for the immediate stop to this pilot in all HIV and sexual health clinics.

We do not accept this policy proposal or any policy that acts as a barrier to accessing healthcare, including the recent move by NHS Digital to share patient details with the Home Office.

We demand a well resourced NHS where people have fair and equal access to healthcare, free at the point of use.
