Dentists
Posted on: April 28 2009, 02:01 pm

Dear all,

I'm conducting a survey for an HIV Treatment Update piece on dentists and accessing them for HIV+ people.

I hear a lot of anecdotal cases of people being refused treatment and so on but on the other hand have also talked to dentists who insist that practice has changed and that having HIV should be no bar to dental care these days.

If you've had negative or positive experiences of dental care recently I'd be very interested in talking to you, you can post straight here, email me privately at gus@nam.org.uk or ring me on 020 7840 0071.

Best wishes,
Gus

Dear Gus

The Dental School at King's College Hospital did a survey of HIV patients at the Caldecot Centre and our experience of dentists. Might be worth contacting them to find the results.

I disclosed my HIV status to my dentist on diagnosis. My dentist was very supportive, interested and helpful. Not only is he a good dentist, but he showed concern and interest from a professional perspective as well as a personal one.

...but...he still sees me only as the last patient of the day. It's not a big deal, and I haven't challenged him about it...I don't want to loose him! But there is no reason that I am aware of that means he needs to do this - it was something to do with cleaning instrumentation/equipment used - a flimsy reason at best.

He also wears double gloves - but i don't know whether that is what he does with all patients or only me.

On balance, though, he is a dentist I am happy with, despite these minor "quirks".

Sent directly by email but copied here as I have managed to remember my login.

"Gus,

In London on North End Road there is a dental practice called NHS Dentists - http://www.nhsdentist.com/index.html

We were refered to a dentist who practiced in Clapham some years ago by the local NHS as taking HIV patients. It was a disaster.

NHS Dentist are as you would expect very good at handling the HIV issue. My partner & I go as do many of our friends. HIV etc doesn't seem to be an issue there. Its only mentioned on your medical form and I have never had it mentioned since. Despite what the name suggests it is a Dentist who only deals with NHS patients no private care.

Thought I would just let you know as you asked for info.

Good luck with your article."

I called a national helpline to ask which dentists in my area had expertise in dental care for people with HIV. I was referred to the PCT (cps the  organisation in question is unable to faily recommend one dental practice over another). The PCT said much the same thing...

Asking around via various electronic networks 2 things emerged: 2 dentists which were well happy to see HIV-positive poeple, one NHS one private; 1 dentists especially commissioned by the PCT to provide specialist care; indeed, yes, emailing the commissioner confirmed this...

(In passing the same is true of the GP practice commissioned to provide for people with HIV, which I found out, er, by accident).

I am, to say the least, surprised by both national organisation and PCT telephonist
