Sex & Relationship Education in Schools - a consultation.

From the Terrence Higgins Trust website  http://www.tht.org.uk/informationresources/policy/governmentconsultations/
SRE consultation

As you know, thanks largely to your campaigning, last October the Government announced its plan to make sex and relationships education (SRE) a statutory part of the National Curriculum by 2011.

Although this public commitment has been made, there is currently a review of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education taking place. This is where sex and relationships would be taught.  We are very concerned that unless there is a strong show of support for making PSHE part of the curriculum, the Government may decide not to make this important change.

As part of the review, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority is running a consultation, framed around a short questionnaire. We want  to encourage as many people as possible to complete the survey, showing their support for making sex and relationships education part of the National Curriculum.

It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to fill in, but the more responses the Government receives in favour of this change, the stronger their mandate for implementing it.

You can download the survey as a Word document from the QCA website http://www.qca.org.uk/qca_22292.aspx and then email it to info@qca.org.uk

We've produced an organisational response to the consultation - you could always use this as a basis for your response.

Section 1 is the most important bit, where you can express your support for SRE. Section 2 asks questions about specific areas of the curriculum, which you don't need to answer if you don't feel confident doing so.

NAT - National AIDS Trust - are also urging people to respond to this, adding that "It is really important that as many organisations and individuals as possible respond to this consultation... There has been substantial lobbying against these proposals, therefore your response is absolutely vital"

"Please note that the consultation deadline is 24 July. The two most important questions are in Section 1 - 'PSHE education should become a statutory part of the National Curriculum' [NAT strongly agrees] and 'Parents, carers and guardians should be allowed to maintain the right to withdraw their children from the sex and relationships element of PSHE education' [NAT strongly disagrees]."

I sent in my response last week and it really didn't take long, just a few minutes.

Hello People

How long has this consultation officially been running?  The reason for my question is isn't it government policy and guidelines to hold consultations for 12-13 weeks.  That does give us in the field of sexual health and HIV work enough time to respond to matters that are important to our young people and children's future.
