- A protocol also describes the study's "endpoints." Endpoints are the things that will be measured in order to see which treatment works better (to compare the treatment groups).
- In the example above, the endpoint is HIV infection in infants whose mothers were enrolled in a study and received either Medicine A or Medicine B to lower the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection. Researchers compare how many infants were infected with HIV despite the treatment. Were there more infections in Group A or Group B?
